How do hardwoods differ from softwoods?

“Hardwood” and “softwood” are terms used commercially to distinguish woods. Hardwoods are the woods of dicots, regardless of how hard or soft they are, while softwoods are the woods of conifers. Many hardwoods come from the tropics, while almost all softwoods come from the forests of the northern temperate zone.
