How does a food chain function?

A food chain is the transfer of food energy from the source in plants through a series of organisms eating and being eaten by other organisms. Food chains overlap because many organisms eat more than one type of food, so that these chains can look more like food webs. In 1891 German zoologist Karl Semper (1832–1893) introduced the food chain concept.
