How does driving speed affect gas mileage for most automobiles?

Most automobiles get about 28 percent more miles per gallon of fuel at 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) per hour than at 70 miles (112 kilometers) per hour, and about 21 percent more at 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) per hour than at 70 miles (112 kilometers) per hour.
