How is charcoal made?

Commercial production of charcoal uses wood processing residues, such as sawdust, shavings, milled wood, and bark, as a raw material. Depending on the material, the residues are placed in kilns or furnaces and heated at low oxygen concentrations. A Herreshoff furnace can produce at least a ton of charcoal per hour.
