How many fatalities occur each year in the United States due to lightning?

During the years 1980 to 2009, an average of 57 people were killed each year by lightning. The ten-year average (2000 to 2009) decreased to only 41 people per year. An estimated 300 people are injured by lightning strikes in the United States annually.
