How many individuals are infected with HIV/AIDS?

At the end of 2009, it was estimated that 33.3 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS. Adults accounted for 30.8 million cases of HIV/AIDS (51 percent or 15.9 million are women) and children under 15 accounted for 2.5 million cases. Since 1981, more than 25 million people have died from AIDS. The states/territories in the United States with the greatest incidence of AIDS cases are reported in the following table:
