Plant Structure and Function

How many leaves are on a mature tree?

Leaves are one of the most conspicuous parts of a tree. A maple tree (genus Acer) with a trunk 3 feet (1 meter) wide has approximately 100,000 leaves. Oak (genus Quercus) trees have approximately 700,000 leaves. Mature American elm (Ulmus americana) trees can produce more than five million leaves per season.
