How much gasoline is wasted by underinflated tires?

Underinflated tires waste as much as 1 gallon (4.5 liters) out of every 20 gallons (91 liters) of gasoline. To save fuel, follow the automaker’s guidelines regarding recommended air pressure levels for the tires. However, greater fuel economy can be achieved by inflating tires to the maximum air pressure listed on the sidewall of the tire, resulting in less rolling resistance.
