How much of the world’s energy use is fueled by coal?

Coal provides over 23 percent of global primary energy needs and generates around 39 percent of the world’s electricity. In the United States, coal supplies more than half of the electricity consumed. Nearly 70 percent of total global steel production is dependent on coal.
