What are the tasks of an operating system?

An operating system is found in all computers and more recently in other electronic devices, such as cell phones. The operating system manages all the hardware and software resources of the computer. Operating systems manage data and devices, such as printers, in the computer. Operating systems today have the ability to multitask, allowing the user to keep several different applications open at the same time. Popular operating systems for computers are Windows (Microsoft), OS ? (Macintosh), and Linux.
