Introduction and Historical Background

What contributions did John and William Bartram make to botany?

John Bartram (1699–1777) was the first American-born botanist. He and his son, William Bartram (1739–1823), traveled throughout the American colonies observing the flora and fauna. Although John Bartram never published his observations, he was considered the authority on American plants. In 1791 his son William published his notes on American plants and animals as Bartram’s Travels.
