What does the expression “tiling the plane” mean?

It is a mathematical expression describing the process of forming a mosaic pattern (a “tessellation”) by fitting together an infinite number of polygons so that they cover an entire plane. Tessellations are the familiar patterns that can be seen in designs for quilts, floor coverings, and bathroom tilework.
