A syzygy (sizz-eh-jee) is a configuration that occurs when three celestial bodies lie in a straight line, such as the sun, Earth, and the moon during a solar or lunar eclipse. The particular syzygy when a planet is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun is called an opposition.
