What is petrology and what does a petrologist do?

Petrology is the science of rocks. A petrologist is a person who studies the mineralogy of rocks and the record of the geological past contained within rocks. From rocks, a petrologist can learn about past climates and geography, past and present composition of the earth, and the conditions that prevail within the interior of the earth.
