Classification, Laboratory Tools, and Techniques

What is spectroscopy?

Spectroscopy includes a range of techniques to study the composition, structure, and bonding of elements and compounds. The different methods of spectroscopy use different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum to study atoms, molecules, ions, and the bonding between them.

Type of Spectroscopy Wavelength Used
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy Radio waves
Infrared spectroscopy Infrared radiation
Atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectroscopy Visible and UV radiation
X-ray spectroscopy X rays
