Soil, Gardening, and Farming

What is the difference between container-grown, balled-and-burlapped, and bare-rooted plants?

Container-grown plants have been grown in some kind of pot—usually peat, plastic, or clay—for most or all of their lives. Balled-and-burlapped plants have been dug up with the soil carefully maintained around their roots in burlap. Bare-rooted plants have also been dug from their growing place but without retaining the root ball. Bare-root plants are usually cheaper than the same plants that are sold in containers or burlap wraps. In addition, they are generally available in wider selections and are easy to send through the mail.
