What is the most commonly used renewable energy source?

Hydroelectric power is the most common renewable energy source. Based on consumption, hydroelectric power accounts for 34 percent of the total amount of renewable energy resources. The capacity for hydroelectric power is about 95,000 megawatts. Hydropower facilities in the United States can generate enough power to supply 28 million households or the equivalent of nearly 500 million barrels of oil. In 2008 it accounted for 6 percent of total electricity generation and 67 percent of generation from renewables.
