What is unusual about cave moss?

Cave moss (Schistostega pennata) is a small plant with reflective, sub-spherical cells at its tips. These cells give off an eerie glow that is gold and green in color. In Japan the plant has been the subject of numerous books, television shows, newspaper and magazine articles, and even an opera! There is a national monument to this species near the coast of Hokkaido, where it grows near a small cave.
