What plants can be used to determine blood type? |
Lectins—proteins that bind to carbohydrates on cell surfaces—found in lotus plants as well as jack and lima beans can be used to determine a person’s blood type. Lectins bind to glycoproteins present on the plasma membrane of red blood cells. Because the cells of different blood types have distinct glycoproteins, cells of each blood type bind to a specific lectin.
