What was the first animal to be successfully cloned?

In 1970 the British molecular biologist John B. Gurdon (1933–) cloned a frog. He transplanted the nucleus of an intestinal cell from a tadpole into a frog’s egg that had had its nucleus removed. The egg developed into an adult frog that had the tadpole’s genome in all of its cells and was therefore a clone of the tadpole.
