Phosphorus was first discovered by German chemist Hennig Brand (c. 1630–c. 1710) in 1669 when he extracted a waxy white substance from urine that glowed in the dark. But Brand did not publish his findings. In 1680, phosphorus was rediscovered by the English chemist Robert Boyle.
