When did the first computer virus spread via the Internet?

The first known case of large-scale damage caused by a computer virus spread via the Internet was in 1988. Robert Morris Jr. (1965–), a graduate student at Cornell University, crafted a “worm” virus that infected thousands of computers, shutting down many of them and causing millions of dollars of damage.
