When was the first curbside recycling program established in the United States?

The first municipal-wide curbside recycling program was started in 1974 in University City, Missouri, where city officials designed and distributed a container for collecting newspapers. As of 2008, there were 8,659 curbside recycling programs serving 59 percent of the total population in the United States.
