Tsunamis occur most frequently in the Pacific Ocean, although they also occur in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Sumatra tsunami, which followed a strong earthquake (9.0 on the Richter scale) in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, is perhaps the most devastating on record. The tsunami had waves up to 100 feet (30 meters) in height. Damage and deaths were recorded in 11 countries with a total of more than 230,000 people being killed. Indonesia (168,000 people killed), Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the eastern coast of Africa in Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania all recorded damage and deaths from this event.
