Tin—at least 90 percent. Antimony, copper, and zinc may be added in place of lead to harden and strengthen pewter. Pewter may still contain lead, but high lead content will both tarnish the piece and dissolve into food and drink to become toxic. The alloy used today in fine quality pieces contain 91–95 percent minimum tin, 8 percent maximum antimony, 2.5 percent maximum copper, and 0–5 percent maximum bismuth, as determined by the European Standard for pewter.
