Mushrooms of the genera, Conocybe and Psilocybe, both of which have hallucinogenic properties, were considered sacred by the Aztecs. These mushrooms are still used in religious ceremonies by the descendents of the Aztecs. Psilocybin, which is chemically related to lysengic acid diethylamide (LSD), is a component to both genera and is responsible for the trance-like state and colorful visions experienced by those who eat these mushrooms.
