Who made the first successful synthetic gemstone?

In 1902, Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil (1856–1913) synthesized the first man-made gemstone—a ruby. Verneuil perfected a “flame-fusion” method of producing crystals of ruby and other corundums within a short time period.
