Who was the first Astronomer Royal?

The first Astronomer Royal was John Flamsteed (1646–1719). He was appointed Astronomer Royal in 1675 when the Royal Greenwich Observatory was founded. Until 1972, the Astronomer Royal also served as the Director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
