Why do dogs howl at sirens?

The high pitch of a siren is very similar to the pitch of a dog’s howl. A dog’s howl is a way of communicating with other dogs—either to indicate location or to define territory. When a dog responds to an ambulance or fire engine siren, he is “returning the call of the wild.”
