Why don’t birds get electrocuted when they sit on wires?

In general, birds do not get electrocuted while just sitting on power transmission wires. Most electrocutions happen when a bird opens its wingspan and completes a circuit by bridging the gap between two live wires or a live wire and a grounded wire, or other parts such as transformers and grounded metal crossarms.
