Why is evolution a theory?

A scientific theory is an explanation of observed phenomena that is supported by the available scientific data. The term “theory” is used as an indication that the explanation will be modified as new data becomes available. For example, the Darwin-Wallace theory was proposed prior to the discovery of the molecular nature of genetics but has since been expanded to encompass that information as well.
