Introduction

For what Supreme Court position was Roberts first nominated?

President George W. Bush first nominated Roberts to the position of associate justice on July 19, 2005, after Sandra Day O’Connor announced her intention to retire. However, Chief Justice William Rehnquist died on September 3, 2005. Two days later, President Bush announced that he was nominating Roberts for the position of chief justice. Justice O’Connor agreed to continue on the Court until a new nominee was announced and confirmed.
