The Stone Court (1941–46)

Introduction

How did Stone die?

On April 12, 1946, Stone stumbled and faltered while reading one of his dissents from the bench. Justice Hugo Black, sensing something was wrong with the chief justice, grabbed the gavel and announced that the Court would take a break. Black and Justice Stanley F. Reed assisted Stone to his chambers and someone called an ambulance. However, Stone died later that evening of a cerebral hemorrhage.
