The White Court (1910–21)

Introduction

Was White President Grover Cleveland’s first choice for the Supreme Court as an associate justice?

No, President Cleveland had first nominated William B. Hornblower and then Wheeler Peckham (the brother of future Supreme Court justice Rufus Peckham) to replace Justice Samuel Blatchford. Cleveland chose Hornblower and Peckham in part because they were from New York, the same state as Blatchford. However, the Senate rejected Hornblower 30–24 and Peckham 41–32. Cleveland then selected White, who was confirmed on February 19, 1894, the very day he was nominated.
