What exactly were the Pentagon Papers?

The Pentagon Papers referred to a seven-thousand-page study commissioned by Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. McNamara ordered a study that traced the history of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam conflict. Only fifteen copies of this classified study existed.
