Charles Hamilton Houston, the special counsel for the NAACP in the late 1930s, argued the case for Lloyd Gaines before the U.S. Supreme Court. Houston attended Harvard Law School, where he became the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review. He served as a mentor to future U.S. Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall.
