The Burger Court is the only collection of justices in Supreme Court history (not including the new-in-2005 Roberts Court) in which changes on the bench resulted only from the retirement of a justice. Every other Court from the Marshall Court to the Rehnquist Court had justices who died while still serving on the bench.
