Ironically, Chief Justice William Rehnquist was the only member of the Court to never have any prior judicial experience before becoming an associate justice. He practiced law in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1953 to 1969 before becoming an assistant U.S. attorney general from 1969 to 1971.
