How can a gardener preserve unripe tomatoes before a winter frost?

As any gardener knows, the first freeze of the winter season will kill many plants and ruin fruits and vegetables that have not yet been harvested. Tomatoes that are still a bit green can be placed in a paper bag and stored in a dry, dark pantry, where they should continue to ripen normally.
