What are Sun dogs and Moon dogs?

When ice crystals are present in the air, the light from the Sun or Moon can be reflected, causing bright spots to appear on either side of these heavenly bodies. Sun dogs—also called “mock suns” or “parhelions”—are sometimes so bright that they look like two companion suns appearing at angles of about 22 degrees on either side of the Sun.
