What is a Sun pillar?

Sun pillars are streaks of white or reddish light that extend vertically by as much as 20 degrees from the Sun. Occurring most often at sunrise and sunset, like haloes and coronas Sun pillars are seen because of ice crystals in the atmosphere. In populated areas, when icy fog occurs Sun pillars can sometimes be seen around street lights.
