What is a barometer

A barometer is a device that measures air pressure. A standard barometer consists of a glass tube filled with mercury (a liquid metal) that is inserted into a reservoir, which also contains mercury. When the surrounding air pressure exerts more weight on the reservoir than the mercury in the tube does, the mercury level rises, and vice versa.
