What is a mirage?

As light passes from warm to cool air, or vice versa, light is refracted, causing images to appear in places distant from their actual location. Mirages are frequently seen on hot days and on surfaces such as road pavement, sand, or concrete, where the surfaces are very hot. In such cases, light rays from the distant horizon appear wavy and close up, making it appear as if water is nearby.
