What is a rope tornado?

A rope tornado is simply a descriptive phrase referring to a tornado that has a thin, bending, rope-like appearance. Some people make the bad mistake of thinking that rope tornadoes are regular tornadoes that are beginning to dissipate (dissipating tornadoes are described as “roping out.”) Actually, they can be just as intense as tornadoes with much wider funnels.
