Heat

What is heat stroke?

Also called sunstroke, heat stroke happens when a person’s body temperature exceeds 106°F (41°C). Symptoms include a rapid and strong pulse, hot, dry skin, and eventually unconsciousness. Heat stroke is considered a medical emergency, and immediate treatment is indicated to lower the body’s temperature. Fluids, however, should be withheld. Hundreds of people die every year in the United States because of heat stroke, either while outside or while in an unconditioned room. Pets and livestock are also susceptible to this condition.
