What is the difference between a cyclone and a typhoon?

The words “cyclone” and “typhoon” are simply other words for hurricane. When hurricanes occur west of the International Dateline in the northwest Pacific Ocean, they are referred to as typhoons, and when they occur in the Indian Ocean and near Australia, they are called cyclones.
