How has American culture helped to shape the visual arts among African-American artists?

Despite numerous obstacles that they have faced, African-American artists have made substantial contributions to the visual arts. For too long they were separated from the rich artistic influence of their African heritage, leaving white Europeans to appreciate African art long before white America did so. From colonial times to the present, black artistic talent has been encouraged and recognized but, for too long, on a limited basis by reigning establishments and connoisseurs in this country.
