Were white colleges in the South open to blacks before the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954?

The University of South Carolina was first opened to all races on March 3, 1868. B. A. Boseman and Francis L. Cardozo were elected to the board of trustees. There was a long series of disturbances which occurred between July 8 and October 26, 1876, and federal troops were sent in.
