Among those prominently associated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee are activist (and one of SNCC’s founders) Ella Josephine Baker, along with Marion Barry, James Forman, Fannie Lou Hamer, John Lewis, and Ruby Doris Smith-Robinson. As the group changed leadership later on during the Civil Rights Movement, and moved away from its nonviolent philosophy, its leaders were such figures as Stokely Carmichael (later known as Kwame Turé), and H. Rap Brown.
