How does the white blood cell count change with age?

At birth, a newborn has a higher white blood cell count (9,000 to 30,000 cells per cubic millimeter of blood), but this number falls to adult levels (4,500 to 10,000 cells per cubic millimeter of blood) within two weeks of birth. The total white blood cell count decreases slightly in the elderly.
